Camilla

The name Camilla is a girl's name of Latin origin meaning "young ceremonial attendant". The Spanish Camila, pronounced ka-MEE-la, is the fastest rising version of this ancient Roman name, but recent royal Camilla may have helped promote the British brand. In Roman myth, Camilla was a swift-footed huntress so fast she could run over a field without bending a blade of grass. Camilla has been in English-speaking use since the sixteenth century, and appeared in Virgil's Aeneid as a virgin queen. It was later popularized by an eponymous Fanny Burney novel, and in modern times Camilla Macaulay is the protagonist of Donna Tartt's The Secret History. Today, the name is connected to the former Camilla Parker Bowles, now the Duchess of Cornwall. The floral name Camellia has also begun to bloom.
