In the Old Testament, Naomi was the mother-in-law of Ruth. After the death of her husband and sons and upon her return to Bethlehem, Naomi took the name Mara, meaning bitter. The name first gained recognition in modern times with the appearance of supermodel Naomi Campbell, followed up by actress Naomi Watts. And while it’s never been a very popular girls’ name, it’s been on the rise lately perhaps finally getting the attention it deserves.
