In Irish tradition, Tara was the name of a hill where the ancient Irish kings were said to have reigned. In Irish mythology it is also a mystical place for the gods and an entrance to the “otherworld.” Tara is probably more widely recognized as the name of the O’Hara’s plantation in Margaret Mitchell’s sweeping Southern epic Gone with the Wind. The name has declined in popularity since hitting its peak in the 1970s.
